Christ Alone: Rejecting Idolatry and Misplaced Hope in American Christianity
This message confronts one of the most challenging tensions we face as believers: where do we place our ultimate hope? Drawing from Psalm 62, we're reminded that God alone is our rock, our salvation, and our defense. The psalmist repeats words like 'only' and 'alone' to drive home a singular truth—no other source of deliverance comes close to matching God's sufficiency. Yet the American church has increasingly placed its hopes in political systems and individual leaders rather than in Christ and His body. History shows us the dangers of top-down religiosity, from the Spanish Inquisition to other forms of state-sponsored faith that created resentment rather than genuine transformation. We're called to advocate for biblical principles in society, but we must be careful not to outsource our faith to elected representatives, treating a ballot as our primary witness. The work of proclaiming Jesus belongs to the church, not the state. When we hitch our wagons to political movements or personalities, we risk compromising our witness and confusing our allegiance. Our citizenship in God's kingdom must always supersede our national identity, and our allegiance to Christ must remain unshakeable, regardless of who occupies positions of earthly power.
