Living as Salt and Light: Embracing Your God-Given Purpose
In this powerful exploration of Matthew 5:13-16, we discover that our identity in Christ is not about striving to become something, but recognizing what we already are. Jesus declares with certainty that His followers ARE the salt of the earth and the light of the world—not that we should try to be these things. This distinction is transformative. Like salt that seasons food, suppresses bitterness, and preserves what would otherwise decay, we carry within us the capacity to bring out the best in our surroundings and prevent spiritual corruption. Similarly, as light that cannot help but illuminate darkness, we naturally reveal the Father's goodness when Christ remains at the center of our lives. The challenge isn't to manufacture saltiness or brightness through our own efforts, but to avoid the two great dangers: removing Christ from the equation (like salt losing its saltiness when dissolved away) or covering our light with baskets of fear and pride. When we spend intentional time with our Savior, prioritize His presence in our daily schedules, and refuse to hide who He's made us to be, we fulfill our created purpose. The world around us is desperately searching for the taste of heaven and the illumination of truth—and we carry both within us through Christ.
